"I didn't seek therapy because I thought you had to have money. I didn't know insurance covered therapy."

A client shared this with me recently during a session, and I haven't stopped thinking about it.

That one statement highlights a barrier that prevents so many people from seeking support when they need it most.
I loved every minute of it.
Many individuals assume therapy is only for people who can afford to pay hundreds of dollars out of pocket. Others believe their insurance won't cover mental health services, so they never even explore their options. As a result, they continue carrying anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, grief, relationship challenges, and life transitions on their own.
The truth is that many health insurance plans provide mental health benefits, and for many people, therapy may be much more accessible than they realize.
Of course, coverage varies by plan, and there are still barriers that exist within our healthcare system. But one of the biggest barriers is often misinformation.
When people believe therapy is financially out of reach, they may never make the phone call, complete the consultation, or ask the questions that could connect them to the support they deserve.
This is why mental health education matters.
This is why conversations about therapy matter.
This is why we must continue to break down the stigma and misconceptions surrounding mental health treatment.
If you've been considering therapy but assumed you couldn't afford it, I encourage you to check your insurance benefits, ask questions, and explore your options. You may discover that support is more accessible than you think.
No one should suffer in silence because they believe help is out of reach.
Mental health care is health care, and everyone deserves access to support, healing, and the opportunity to thrive.
